The Lutheran congregation of Kispest was established in 1894, at the
initiative of the teacher Samuel Masznyi, as an affiliation to the
Hungarian Church in Budapest. The first divine service was held in
1895 at the elementary school in Fo (Main) Street.

 The
fold developed spiritually and also materially thanks to the
generosity of its members. In 1901 they received a plot of land from
the village for the building of a church, a parsonage and a
cantorlodge. The congregation became independent in 1907 as a
missionary pastoral station, and in 1922 as a fully independent
mother-church.
When in 1918 Lutheran services were banned in state schools, the
Calvinist church opened its doors to the homeless flock. The
foundation stone of the church was laid on the 9th July 1924, and
the completed building was consecrated on the 22nd May 1927. It was
repainted in 1936 according to plans by its designer, Gyula Sándy.
It suffered serious damages during the war and was restored by 1948.
In 1984 the exterior was renovated.
Gyula Sándy, architect of most 20th century Lutheran churches
especially at the outskirts of Budapest, emphasizes Hungarian
characteristics in the style and decoration of this work of his too.
The frieze around the ridge of the belltower and also on the two
round-based parts on the sides of the façade housing the staircases
is reminiscent of wall-finishes so popular in Upper Northern
Hungary's renaissance period.
The tower with its many windows is attractive. The castle-character
reflected by the bastions, towers, symbolize A mighty Fortress is
our God - the inscription over the portal of Lutheran churches.
The main portal leads through the small chapel under the choir into
the square-based interior. The quadrangular chancel is separated
from the rest of the hall by a semi-circular triumphal arch, with
the same graffito decoration we saw outside. The altarpiece, painted
by Iza Farádi Veres, depicts Jesus praying in the Garden of
Gethsemane.
All furnishings of the church are original, from 1927.
